County Upper U16’s took on top of the table Essex Rockets in Bury St Edmunds this weekend. Playing their best basketball of the season on their home court CU were able to pull out a heroic 85 – 81 victory sending them into second place in the table with a 4 – 1 win – loss record.
Opening a quick 32 – 19 lead after the 1st quarter, County Upper were able to continue this momentum leading into half time as they built a 22 point lead 54 – 32. Essex Rockets regrouped at half-time and stormed back into the game in the second half. With a tiring CU team making silly mistakes The Rockets were able to cut County Uppers lead to just 12 points after the 3rd quarter 68 – 56 and with a barrage of 3 pointers in the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter the Rockets brought the game to just a 2 point advantage for County Upper with 38 second left on the clock 81 – 79. A huge 2 pointer from Brandon Marshall gave CU a 4 point cushion with 24 second remaining, The Rockets responded with a 2 pointer of their own from a fast break with only 14 second left on the clock. Rockets then fouled Luca Beadle driving to the basket, with the Rockets on team fouls Beadle headed to the FT line, knocking down two huge FT’s CU pushed their lead back to 4 point with only 6 second left on the clock. With time expiring the Rockets shoot a 3 pointer which missed allowing County Upper to clear up and run out the clock giving the home team the Huge win.
“This game today was a huge win for us” said coach Johnson “Playing the Essex Rockets over the past 4 years we have been beaten consistently by 30 – 45 points. The win today reflects the improvements we have made as a team over last season and this season. I am hoping we can maintain the discipline shown on the offencive and defencive end in today’s game and build on it as we progress through the season”.
County Upper were lead in scoring with Brandon Marshall with his a Huge 31 points and supported by Josh Hales and Luca Beadle with 19 and 17 points respectively.
County Upper U16’s will be back in actions on the 4th November when they head down to Brentwood to take on the Brentwood Leopards Black.
