With our club and academy expanding, the demand for coaches has become greater and with the next season lurking what better way to fix this by signing a 7ft 1 Italian, NBA Draft, ex-professional basketball player! The Wolfpack welcome Augusto (Gus) Binelli into the family for season 2020-2021. By introducing experienced coaches like Binelli and Spanish coach Angel Navarro in 2018, it’s not just their knowledge and level of coaching that players will benefit from, but the different cultures and the styles of play they bring. In 2019 Coach Angel Navarro passed on the famous Spanish touch to WSW basketball; now it’s time for Coach Binelli to sprinkle some Italian magic!

Binelli was born in Tuscany, Italy where his basketball career begun before retiring in 2010. In his time he represented the Italian National Team, Virtus Bologna (A1), 102 times in 17 years. Not to mention he was the first ever Italian picked in the NBA, drafted in the second round by the Atlanta Hawks in 1986! Bonelli’s career highlights consists of: being the 1998 Euroleague champion, being in the 1995 FIBA European Selection, winning the 1990 FIBA Saporta Cup, five times Italian League Champion, five times Italian Cup Winner and a 1995 Italian Supercut Winner.

At the age of 45 Augusto hung up his boots, but to only start a new path through coaching. Since 2010 he’s coached a variety of age groups. At WSW he will oversee all the club teams while focusing more on the U14 Girls Team, U18 Men and the Senior Men.

Coach Johnson explained, “I am really happy to have someone with Augusta Binelli’s playing experience and knowledge joining our programme. His experience of playing at the highest level in Europe, plus his International experience will prove a big factor in helping our players grow on the court and help widen their knowledge about the game at the professional and international level.  We have discussed many ways in which Augusta can and will help our programme expand and improve, so I am really excited to get him here and to start working together.”

We can sit here and explain why we signed this coach but we think his past and whats he’s achieved says it all.. Welcome to the Wolfpack Coach Augusto Binelli!
