In a game of two different halves County Upper had an emphatic second half but just fell short of a huge upset 53 – 59. New additions to the roster Dan Moore and Cameron Pool…. added much needed support during the game but were unable to help CU pull out the win.
With a mixture of returning players, new players and current players CU took time in adjusting to a well coached SouthendSwifts team. Struggling offensively against a solid Swifts defence the home team were able to get quick points of CountyUpper’s turnovers building a quick 9 point lead at the end of the first quarter 13 – 22.
Southend were able to extend their lead in the second quarter as they continued to take advantage of County Upper’sturnovers. Leading into the half time break Southend extended their lead to 14 points with a 15 – 20 quarter.
The second half saw CU start to make strides in phases as they first locked down Southend defensively only allowing them to score 10 points in the quarter. Although County Upper was starting to play great defence their offence ground to a halt as they were only able to score 6 points. With Southends lead increasing to 18 points 52 – 34 at the end of the 3rd quarter the game looked out of reach for the Bury St Edmunds club.
All that changed in the 4th quarter as CU finally started to fire on all cylinders both defensively and offensively taking the game to Swifts. Brandon Marshall stepped up big scoring 10 of his 16 points in the final quarter while also getting some huge blocks defensively. County Upper started the quarter quick with an 11 – 3 run closing Swifts lead to 10 points, the quarter was closed out with a 8 – 4 run and just falling short.
“We are finally starting to click as a team both offensively and defensively which is great to see” said Coach Johnson after the game. “This team have had a lot of obstacles thrown at them so early in the season. I am proud of the players in how they have dealt with these obstacles and how they are starting to come together. Today has shown all of our players how good we can be, I am looking forward to seeing our team in action once we are at full strength”.
County Upper was lead in scoring by Josh Hales and Brandon Marshall who both scored 16 points and were supported by 11 points from Dan Moore.
